Saar: The Art of Zardozi and Beadwork

In the summer of 2022, I started learning zardozi and beadwork techniques from a kaarigar who has his workshop in Pune. Then finally, I developed these two swatches of zardozi and beadwork inspired by the floral and bel motifs used in Indian textiles. The use of flowers in Indian culture transcends aesthetic attributes, and each motif resonates with unique traditions, storytelling, and beliefs.

Zardozi:

I have used the kamdani zardozi technique on velvet fabric to make the design. In which, I have done Zari work using gold and silver badlas (metallic wires); aari work, and dabka work to get the raised textures.

Beadwork:

I have tried the padded beadwork technique, on silk-cotton fabric, to get an embossed effect. For which we first stitch a dori (of a desired thickness) as the base and then use beads on it to get the embossed effect.
