The Commons: Apparel Weave Design

During my final semester in college, amidst the whirlwind of responsibilities and the transition into the professional world, this period is a crucial part of our journey. But as well as particularly overwhelming as we prepare ourselves to enter the industry. However, amidst the chaos, one of the techniques that helped me was deliberately training my mind to appreciate and document the small joys and meaningful moments in my surroundings. And this served as my inspiration for this Apparel Weave Design project.

As much as I tried sticking to my new experimental area of objective abstractionism, I still felt it in my veins that I simply had to create a character that would help me encapsulate the 'causal magic' or the essence in the things I've seen and experienced.

I started with in-depth research to understand my subject in a better way. Click on the drive link below to go through the entire research step-by-step (brand research, comparative analysis, trend research and VOC voice-of-customer).

A storyboard followed by a moodboard of the project.

Drawn from the narrative's inspiration, they would embody the essence of the diverse textures mentioned – the rugged, pebble-like surface of stones; the gentle caress of grass blades on bare skin; the intricate, raised, concentric rings adorning a wooden bark; the graceful folding of fabric; the linear alignment of book spines; the dappled dance of sunlight on a polished marble floor; the unique contours of various leaves; the skin that enwraps different fruits and vegetables, each telling its own story; and the narrative spun by threads as they are woven into a dress, all becoming an integral part of my experience. They observed the transformation of the various shapes and textures of ordinary, everyday objects that surrounded them into a rich tapestry, encapsulating the often overlooked beauty of these simple yet ever-present elements of their daily lives, which perpetually existed in the backdrop of their existence.

Subsequently, I curated an inspiration board to initiate the ideation process for the swatches.

I then selected the fabrics based on my analysis from secondary research.

Let me show you a couple of explorations of how it started. Desiring to explore color blocking, I started crafting digital sketches depicting the placement of colors, Jamdani motifs, and various stripe patterns and color schemes using WeavePoint software.

Finally, the weaving process commenced!

I opted to employ Theo Moorman's weaving method, utilizing interlocked wefts to craft motifs and vibrant color blocks within the fabric. This is similar to the Jamdani technique.

Theo Moorman's weaving technique involves creating pictorial designs by incorporating supplementary weft threads into the fabric. These supplementary threads are woven in such a way that they float on the surface, creating patterns against the background fabric. This technique allows for a high level of detail and complexity in the woven design.

It started by illustrating swatches and color placements for every swatch. After a lot of back and forth, color placements were finally done. Ready to be woven! Subsequently, I tried 3D mapping on shirts, as that was my product category.

That's about it, and maybe you felt like you were scrolling a while but I hope it was worth it!

Thank you :)
