Navarasa: Weave Design

The theme is Navarasa, and I have developed two swatches inspired by shringaram (love or beauty) and hasya (laughter or amusement). My interpretation of each of these emotions has been depicted through the weaves. The colors portray my association with that emotion. I tried to perceive the emotions unconventionally rather than going with the very first interpretation of that emotion.

A bit of a story behind it: Moving out and living far from home makes you realize and appreciate things, and you seek comfort, warmth, and love in small, little things. We observe things that we rarely used to get to know about. As we don’t have the luxury of having our loved ones around us, and that’s when we understand the worth of these cute, little things.

Hasya:

The warmth of garments that have just been picked out of the dryer

Milk being poured into coffee

Dog ears. Just dog ears

Seeing a single flower growing in a random place makes you believe that even seemingly odd or even impossible things do happen

Imagining that the sun or the moon is actually following your car; that it’s keeping an eye on you

Falling asleep on the couch and waking up with a blanket on

Those mini raindrops racing down the car window and rooting for that one special raindrop as it travels down the window

The fact that there are entire boutiques dedicated to tea

The thought that in the great grand scheme of things, we're just tiny specks that will one day be forgotten. So, it doesn't matter what we did in the past or how we will be remembered. Yes, that’s from BoJack Horseman

In this, I have used shades of yellow, orange, and red, portraying the blissfulness and joy that we experience when we find these things amusing and grin.

In this swatch, I have developed plain, twill, and dobby weaves using cotton, polyester, chunky and metallic yarns.

Shringaram:

That one person who stops and waits for you while you tie your shoe. Holding the door for others, but not when they’re too far away because then they have to do that awkward little run

When someone asks you to text them when you get home safe, and who, if you forget, texts you to make sure you actually got home. It just shows that it’s not something they just said but that they actually care

That one friend who wishes you happy birthday at midnight

When you want to take a seat, but there’s no more room, and someone scooches over for you

When someone comes to drop you off when they are going in the opposite direction

When you’re telling a story or a joke and it seems like no one’s listening or you keep getting interrupted, but there’s that one person who maintains eye contact, waiting for you to continue

When someone remembers small details of you that you’d mentioned casually at some point

I have used hues of pink and lavender, metaphorically depicting the warmth and joy one feels when we actually appreciate the beauty behind the thought of that action.
